4 Tips for Networking On LinkedIn

Getting active on LinkedIn has really helped me forge so many connections.  I got active on the platform at the end of 2019 and over the course of the years, I’ve developed a powerful network.  Here’s the thing— my network is more than just “followers” or “connections.”  I have built real connections on this platform.  People who I have hosted events with (like Eva Reid), people who I co-host the weekly #GeospatialConnections with on Twitter. I have gotten great consulting opportunities as well by being active on the platform.

That said, you don’t have to publish content every single day (or even multiple times a week!) to get a lot out of the LinkedIn platform. So let’s chat quickly about how to network on LinkedIn.

Connect by smashing that connect button!

Connecting with people on the platform is sort of the whole point!  Building a network is a key part of having a LinkedIn. However, it isn’t about the numbers.  Rather it is about connecting with people who you think have interesting things to say and share.

Comment On Others Posts

A lot of people are really apprehensive about posting on LinkedIn.  One really great place to start is by commenting on the work of others.  Having people who comment on my work “fills my tank.” But it’s also a way that I get to know people. I know that when I post about environmental data sets that some people will comment, while if I post about social justice others will comment.

Send a note with your connection request.

When you connect with someone send a note.  I get a lot of connection requests and I generally accept them— unless you work in sales or don’t have a profile picture.  However, I often don’t really know anything about the people who are trying to connect with me.  I really like it when they provide a bit of information on WHY we should connect.  Another note- out of the gate don’t ask for something in your connection request (sending an InMail is another story).  But I often get connection requests where we have ZERO relationships asking me for a job.

If you’d like to see a few examples of templates that I have used provide your email address below and they will populate immediately.

NOTE: Connection requests are limited to 300 characters!
